A tough but ultimately enjoyable experience
After the unexpected success of Weird Decibels 1 we started Weird Decibels 2 in a
confident manner. However early writing sessions proved laboured. For a start,
calling the album Weird Decibels 2 was, perhaps, a mistake. We were trying
(subconsciously) to recreate WdB1, the tracks we had written were quite flat.
We downed tools and regrouped at a cottage near Oakley, Fife. This would be the
start of more successful writing sessions. After two dedicated writing weekends
we had an albums worth of material.
We spent a day in Linlithgow
(helped by a few pints) picking our latest recording location. We opted for
a cottage called Springfield near Kelso at the Scottish borders.
It was a wonderful property, stunning location and the ‘live’
room was huge providing us with arguably our best drum sound.
Mixing and mastering was brutal. Pabs took almost a year for
it to come together. It was getting to a stage where the album was being
over worked.
WdB2 turned out alright, the sound is good on this
record considering we were recording on a Korg D3200. Perhaps some
day we’ll open our wallets and spend some money on a record…but doing
it this way is just so much fun. Great wee record, not ground-breaking
but a solid listen.
